There are several biking clubs and other supporters of the sport in Burnsville, and every year they organize the Burnsville Metric Century Bike Ride, which leads through 60 miles of countryside near the Toe and Cane Rivers. Assault on Mount Mitchell
The Assault on Mt. Mitchell has received a great deal of notoriety since it was first organized in 1974. An incredible endurance race, bikers begin the race in Spartanburg South Carolina and travel by bike to the summit of Mount Mitchell, the tallest mountain in the Appalachian Mountain Range, at Mt. Mitchell State Park near Burnsville NC. The total ride is 102 miles and riders that finish will have climbed over 11,000 vertical feet at the finish. Most cyclists can make the trip in 12 hours and, amazingly, those that finish in the top tiers finish in under 6 hours. In 1999, an offshoot called the the Off-Road Assault on Mt. Mitchell began. It takes riders through 63 miles of the Pisgah National Forest and near Old Fort NC to the summit of Mt. Mitchell.
